Stress and impact on Fertility
Elizabeth Kirby UC Berkeley
In the reproductive system, the brain's hypothalamus produces GnRH, which stimulates the pituitary gland to produce the peripheral hormones, luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, which in turn stimulate production of testosterone, estradiol and sexual behavior. Stress makes the adrenal gland produce glucocorticoids, which act directly on the hypothalamus to suppress GnRH production. UC Berkeley researchers have now found that glucocorticoids also boost hypothalamic GnIH production, which acts to reduce GnRH production as well as to directly lower pituitary secretion of sex hormones, thereby suppressing the entire reproductive system. Common Pesticides May Impair Female Fertility
Fei, Chung & Taylor
This article puts forth what so many of us concerned about the environment's impact on health and fertility have been saying for years: Pesticides are destroying our capacity to reproduce. Here in frightening clarity is proof that this one pesticide alone, the "safe" alternative to DDT, is altering the development and functionality of the uterus. This "alteration" is what is causing difficulty in implantation, thus explaining the massive increase in multiple miscarriages. Is there a solution for those already exposed and thus having a uterus already altered? C'mon...you all know I believe in what other people would call miracles...commitment to health and lifestyle and nutritional changes, as well as deep restful healing time, there is always transformational change. Within the problem, the solution can be found.
The Power of the Female Body: Celebrating our Menstrual Cycles
Susan Roberts
As women, we have been taught to find our menstrual cycles dirty and shameful. More accurately, we are oblivious to our cycles until we get our periods and then, if we grit our teeth and "suffer" through it until it ends. With fertility challenges, the obsession with our cycles begins, but it is not a loving attention: it is fear, resistence, loathing, despair, hope...but nothing about the power of our femininity. I hope this article will move all of us more deeply into the sacred nature of the feminine and the deep power of our cycles to ground us as people and remind us to listen deeply within.
